In 2014, the Internal Transportable Vehicle (ITV) was the last generation in a series of fast attack vehicles used by the United States Marine Corps, Gordon Arthur reported. Its immediate predecessor was the Interim Fast Attack Vehicle (IFAV) based on a Mercedes-Benz G-wagen 290GTD, a type used by the USMC since 1999, and before that the USMC used the M151A2 FAV of the MUTT family.

The key design factor for the ITV 4×4 family was the ability to operate alongside the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft. As the name suggests, it was designed to fit inside the Osprey so it could give the USMC greater mobility. In addition, the ITV could be deployed in the CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter fleet also operated by the USMC.

The ITV family consists of two variants; M1161 Light Strike Vehicle and M1163 Prime Mover. General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems (GD-OTS) was awarded an initial $18.2 million contract in 2004 for system development and demonstration following a competition for the new vehicle. The resulting vehicle is often referred to as the GROWLER due to the fact that it was manufactured by American company American Growler Inc. The ITV was scheduled for full-rate production in 2007, but the project experienced skyrocketing costs and delays. In fact, the GROWLER's unit price rose 120% to $209,000. The first low-cost production units were delivered only in late 2007 and full-cost production was approved the following year.

Although the ITV looks vaguely like a MUTT, it is significantly more advanced in terms of technology. For example, it has a central tire inflation system (CTIS) and a push-button height adjustment system (with three height levels). Other features are four-wheel steering; An important aid when maneuvering in tight spaces on board ships, or when boarding/disembarking helicopters. The vehicle ran on run-flat inserts, which enabled it to drive further up to 30 km, even with a flat tire. It was powered by a Navistar 4-cylinder, 2.8-liter diesel engine. The 132 hp turbocharged unit is mated to a four-speed 4 L70E automatic transmission manufactured by General Motors.

The USMC fielded its first ITVs in January 2009, and by August 2011 the Corps had received 209 M1161s and 102 M1163s. Originally, around 694 GROWLERs were to be delivered, although deliveries would fall below that amount due to budget pressures. The ITV did not offer crew or passengers any armor protection apart from their Kevlar fragmentation resistant seats.

M1161 Light Strike Vehicle: We can now explore the two ITV members in more detail. The M1161, a reconnaissance/fast attack vehicle, was known as the Light Strike Vehicle (LSV). The Marine Corps Systems Command (MCSC) describes it as "a highly mobile, weapons-capable platform to support a variety of operations such as reconnaissance, raids, tactical recovery of aircraft and personnel, and airfield seizure". The LSV can accommodate four Marines, and a weapon ring mount is mounted over the rear compartment. The vehicle could easily be deployed behind enemy lines by air, making it well suited for medium to long reconnaissance missions.

For Silent Watch applications, GROWLER has a generator/battery power management system capable of powering a man-pack radio for up to four hours. This prevented the vehicle's batteries from draining.

To demonstrate the innovative qualities of the platform, Growler received three patents for the M1161. One of these covered the collapsible roll cage, which could be removed entirely to lower the vehicle's profile to meet the height requirements for loading inside the MV-22. This roll-cage feature also allows vehicles to be stacked ~ something that might be desirable in the tight confines of a ship's hold, for example.

M1163 Prime Mover: The M1163 Prime Mover, a short-wheelbase version of the M1161, was a critical part of the Expeditionary Fire Support System (EFSS) designed to provide the USMC with an indirect fire capability that bridged a wide gap Between the M252 81mm mortar and the M777A2 155mm light towed howitzer. This small and light EFSS supports over-the-horizon amphibious or other expeditionary operations, for which the USMC is known.

Three individual elements comprised the EFSS ensemble: the M1163 prime mover, the M327 120 mm mortar and a two-wheel ammunition cart. A battery usually consisted of six EFSS packages (ie six mortars, six ammunition trailers plus twelve associated M1163 prime movers). The EFSS first deployed with the USMC in mid-2009.

The M1163 is basically a glorified tugboat. It is very compact and only holds two marines in the cabin. The ammunition trailer, equipped with electric brakes, carries 30 spare rounds for the 120 mm mortar in insensitive ammunition compatible packaging. The trailer has one axle and weighs 1,588 kg when fully loaded.

The Future 2015: We spoke to Marines to get user opinions on the ITV, and some ofthe comments were that the vehicle was not mechanically reliable and often required unscheduled maintenance. Although the ITV hasn't been around that long, with a life expectancy of ten years, its replacement is already in the works.
