We found this 1964 Grumman 17-foot canoe listed for free on craigslist.org. Formerly owned by the Boy Scouts of America, then auctioned off to a private owner in the mid-1990s, it is now undergoing a complete restoration to its former glory. We assume to have been a very rough 54 year old, it has only one leak which appears to be an accidental puncture of the case with a red .22LR rifle. Everything else is solid and doesn't need much work, other than cosmetics, to restore it.

Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation was founded in 1929 and produced combat aircraft for the Navy during World War II. After taking a heavy wooden and canvas canoe on a fishing trip, one of the company's vice presidents, William Hoffman, came up with the idea of making an aluminum canoe that was 25 to 50 percent lighter. After the war, Grumman branched out into canoes and johnboats, with its first canoes coming out of the aircraft factory in Bethpage, New York. The first canoe produced in 1945 was a 13-footer, and five more models followed by the end of the war. The canoes are made from the same high-quality, high-strength materials used to make their famous Navy destroyers and seaplanes, with the same exceptional level of craftsmanship. Grumman opened a second factory in Marathon, New York, in the 1950s, dedicated exclusively to pleasure craft, and still produces boats today.
The same tools and molds developed for post-war canoe production are still used on the Marathon. Canoes are handcrafted and start with hull halves formed from cold-pressed aluminum alloy sheet, then heat-hardened to T-6 temperatures for extra strength mechanics and reduce the metal's susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. The halves are joined to the extruded aluminum inner and outer keel, molded stem ribs, skirts, stem and stern caps with T-6 Alumilite rivets designed specifically for the Grumman process. The closed space between the rivets provides maximum strength along the keel and ribs. Templates are used to determine uniform spacing for rivets. Canoes are still woven by hand. The extruded inner and outer keels place a neoprene gasket between the hull halves for a watertight seal; Molded rivet heads reduce resistance. The standard 17′ Double-Ender has a T-shaped keel that helps the canoe stay straight and reduces room to maneuver, which we found to be very useful in open water. For whitewater applications, a flatter keel is available with a 3/8" lower profile.
Our 17' Double-Ender, built in the mid-1950s, is made from 0.051-inch-thick aluminum alloy. Grumman also offered a lightweight model with a 0.032″ hull thickness for canoeists who carried a lot. The lighter models had extra ribs to compensate for the thinner hull material. The standard 17′ Double-Ender weighs 75 pounds and the lightweight 60 pounds. The latest Marathon boats have hulls that are 0.060 inches thick and weigh 81 pounds as a result.
We found our last Double-Ender on Craigslist in 2013. Canoe trailers are easy to assemble and can be rolled up with one hand on one end and then the other by lifting the roof rack. Secure the canoe upside down on the passenger side. This provides the driver with better visibility. The canoe prevents the frame from being attached to the side except for the two top brackets. Once the canoe is in the water, it handles well, and the wide bottom and full ends provide excellent stability. I can climb easily from the side. With a long waterline and keel, the Double-Ender goes straight and makes it easy to ride; We saw up to 3 nodes, in fact, to test this.
